Solomon quotes piano teacher Veda Kaplinsky of Julliard: “Genius is an abnormality, and can signal other abnormalities…Many gifted kids have A.D.D. They may have dyslexia and have difficulty learning to read, they may have serious problems with math, or they may have perceptual-motor problems leading to number reversals or difficulties in handwriting… Sometimes these children also have an inability to focus and attend, and they are classified as having an attention disorder.”ĭrew Peterson, another prodigy in Andrew Solomon’s story, didn’t speak until he was three and a half, just a few short years before he was playing at Carnegie Hall. Typically these children excel at abstract verbal reasoning and seem very bright and motivated outside of school, but they encounter serious problems with school tasks. The Nueva School has plenty of these children, and they receive a great deal of individual attention. “Academically gifted children are sometimes so uneven in their scholastic profiles that they are learning disabled in some domain. ![]() ![]() In her book Gifted Children: Myths and Realities, developmental psychologist Ellen Winner explores two such sets of unevenly gifted children: Students enrolled in Johns Hopkins University’s Study of Mathematically Precocious Youth, who at ages 12 and 13 are able to score in the 700s in SAT math skills but show large discrepancies in verbal abilities, and children enrolled in The Nueva School for academically gifted children outside of San Francisco: Armstrong learned to count at 15 months, began composing music at age 5, attended college at age 9, and dabbles in things like physics, chemistry and mathematics for fun.įor every child in Armstrong’s mold, however, there are just as many whose abilities skyrocket in one specific field even while lagging behind the norm in others. Kit Armstrong, one of several children profiled in Andrew Solomon’s 2012 New York Times piece “How do you Raise a Prodigy?”, may be a classic example of a child who is “globally gifted”. It appears prodigiousness is not genetic, nor is it necessarily even a reflection of intelligence. ![]() ![]() ![]() Key words: spore-forming bacteria, phenol, benzoic acid, methanogenic conditions, carboxylation. These results suggest that spore-forming microorganisms are involved in the carboxylation of phenol and in the decarboxylation and dehydroxylation of 4-hydroxybenzoic acid. Also, the consortium from a treated inoculum retained its ability to decarboxylate and dehydroxylate 4-hydroxybenzoic acid forming phenol and benzoic acid, respectively, but could not accomplish the other reactions. In contrast to the untreated culture, none of the strains isolated were able to carboxylate phenol in pure culture or in coculture, nor could they decarboxylate or dehydroxylate 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, or oxidize 2-hydroxybenzyl alcohol, or O-demethylate anisole or 2-methoxyphenol. Four of these strains were identified as Clostridium spp. Five colonies with distinct morphologies were isolated from this culture on solid medium. In this culture, methane production was not detected and benzoic acid accumulated. Electron microscopic observations of the consortium from an inoculum that was heated for 15 min at 80 ☌ revealed only Gram-positive bacilli. The consortium from an inoculum that was treated with heat, or heat and ethanol, retained the ability to carboxylate phenol under strictly anaerobic conditions. Under aerobic conditions, phenol was not transformed by the consortium and no growth was observed on solid medium. ![]() A methanogenic consortium transforming phenol to benzoic acid was submitted to different treatments to characterize the carboxylating microorganisms and eventually to facilitate their isolation. ![]() ![]() ![]() These templates and scripts were borrowed from these repos around spring 2016, so there may be newer changes in their source repos. ![]() The Windows Packer template and several scripts (mainly win-updates.ps1) are mostly borrowed from the excellent joefitzgerald/packer-windows and dylanmei/packer-windows-templates repos, with some additions. If the image build and capture process used in this project were better documented, it would be easier to know exactly how to remove these steps or further customize the image, but for now this project assumes a familiarity with Windows OSD deployment, Sysprep, PowerShell, etc. You may choose to omit some of these steps (for example installing your own custom Office) and just comment them out. The particular sequence of steps to build the image is quite site-specific and I've tried where possible to leave the scripts intact but to remove any links to internal locations and credentials. LTSB isn't strictly required, but it's what we're using currently. It is a fully up-to-date Windows 10 LTSB installation including Office 2016, Sophos and the BootCamp drivers. This particular image is used in dual-boot labs managed by this project's maintainer. This tool hasn't yet been tested with Winclone 6 - WIM support should be possible but it's likely going to need some minor changes to be compatible with how Winclone 6 expects the image bundle to be laid out. Winclone 6, released after this tool was originally written, now also uses the WIM format to store the image. It can also output the image in WIM format, using wimlib tools to build the image. Winclone Pro also supports installing these images via a self-extracting bundle-style macOS installer package, which this tool can also produce. By default it will build the image in a format compatible with Winclone or DeployStudio. This repo is a collection of tools and scripts that can be used to automatically build a Windows image from start to finish in a virtual machine, and was written for imaging Windows onto labs of Mac computers. ![]() ![]() ![]() “Tess is into movies and has a lot of personal interests that she pursues independently without anybody driving her to do that,” Fincher says. This mother/daughter relationship is the most important aspect of Open Roads, and it’s something about which Fullbright thought carefully. The hand-drawn art style popped, but it also turned heads for the top-tier talent cast in the two leading roles: Keri Russell ( The Americans, Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker) and Kaitlyn Dever ( Booksmart, Dopesick).Īctresses Keri Russell and Kaitlyn Dever have helped bring the characters of Opal and Tess to life, recording at times together and apart. And rightfully so, as it centered on a mother and daughter’s journey to discover more behind their family history – a different set of protagonists than we usually see in our video game adventures. ![]() Two years ago, the debut trailer for its third game, Open Roads, was met with excitement. In creating a game about a road trip, you could say Gone Home developer Fullbright experienced these highs and lows at every turn. However, the memories that help us power through the tedium often stick – singing along to a classic, having a heart-to-heart conversation, or observing a surprising sight. Sometimes the open road instills a sense of freedom other times, you feel trapped. There are stretches of nothingness, and your numb mind tries to pass the time until you reach the destination. Every road trip has bumps along the way - unexpected potholes, constant traffic, and extra pit stops. ![]() ![]() ![]() Meaning, “dark magical girls deconstructions” are old news, it’s time to deconstruct or subvert their tropes already: Returning back to the “Magical Girl” part of the title - the series’ genre can be accurately described as post-dark mahou shoujo - by the same merit as the post-cyberpunk subgenre of sci-fi. It feeds both the sci-fi and over-the-top fun aspects of the series because there is just something magical about watching a mahou shoujo overcharging an assault rifle bullet with energy to a point where it becomes a bunker-buster. Magic memory wipe - a full-on complex neurosurgery that needs the use of a (magic) tomograph. ![]() Magic truth serum - a magically altered barbiturate cocktail. Magic shield - it’s actually a magic explosive reactive armor. Magic animal mascot - a synthetic life-form with true AI. The show rightfully brags about having a dedicated military advisor, and it also sciences the shit out of anything magical. The big highlight of the series - it’s an absolute treat to any modern military buff, a hard sci-fi fan, or just anyone who likes authors doing their research. Again, Metal Gear is the most apt comparison. There is plenty of unadulterated brainless B-movie fun that would make for a totally inappropriate tonal clash if it was any less self-aware. That’s not to say this series is completely dramatic. Anyway, don’t watch this if you can’t handle torn-off limbs, just don’t delude yourself into thinking one’s sensibility has anything to do with the objective merits of the work of fiction. Try calling something like Saving Private Ryan “edgy” and you will be laughed at, yet the same shit flies with anime for reasons that are not the topic of this review (*cough*, only children watch Chinese cartoons, *cough*). Like I said, this is a military drama about war and terrorism - if a story like this isn’t dark, then it’s toothless and fails to achieve its purpose. And by “appropriately”, I mean that if you hear someone calling a show like this “edgy” or “gratuitous” - those people are clueless. The writing is competent, dealing with the brought-up themes in a mature and nuanced way.Ĭonsequently, given the genre and the height of its proverbial brow, this is an appropriately dark show. most accurate portrayals of PTSD in fiction, btw), the effect of a global war on the world order (the classical Mahou Shoujo battle with monsters was won by the MC several years before the series even begins), political fuckery between the competing military branches, battlefield camaraderie and so on - all the genre staples. In fact, Metal Gear is an almost complete thematic match for this show - gut-wrenching military drama plus “twenty minutes into the future and the world has gone to hell” sci-fi plus wacky tongue-in-cheek comedy.Īs a military drama, it touches on the themes of child soldiers (that is, magical girls), terrorism, PTSD of soldiers and civilians (one of the best and Do not be misled by the words “Mahou Shoujo” in the title, this is a military/sci-fi drama about an anti-terrorist unit, it is far more in line with Ghost in the Shell/Metal Gear rather than with any actual mahou shoujo series. ![]() ![]() ![]()
